View of a wide road with shops and tall buildings either side. Tables and chairs are laid out in the road and bicycles are parked up on the right side. There is a clock tower which is taller than the rest of the buildings with a turquoise turret on the left, and snowy mountains can be seen at the end of the road, in front of light blue evening sky

Incredible Innsbruck, the stunning Tyrolean capital, is a city fringed by stunning nature at every turn.

Tyrol is a region known for its incredible natural beauty, with dramatic alpine ranges, pristine lakes, and rolling green hills — it’s one of Central Europe’s most stunning areas. And the city of Innsbruck is the perfect base from which you can explore it all. But a stay in Innsbruck itself offers plenty of things to see and do.

At the southern end of Maria Theresa Street, one of the city centre’s primary streets lies the Triumphal Arch (constructed in 1765). During the winter months, the arch is framed perfectly by Austria’s snow-capped mountains. For spectacular views of the city and the surrounding beauty, take a ride on the Hungerburg Funicular, which ascends 2,811 feet above sea level. The highlight of your Innsbruck adventure will have to be the Hofburg Palace, where the Habsburg dynasty lived and reigned.

December is a particularly charming time to visit, when a series of Christmas markets spring up around the city, offering delicious and warming goods to enjoy in the winter weather.
