Ljubljana is one of culture, history, and nature - and yet it is known as one of Europe’s most laidback capital cities.
Slovenia’s capital is home to a bewitching old town, the elegant Triple Bridge, a striking twin-towered cathedral, plenty of captivating museums and galleries, and a prized position on the River Ljubljanica. Best of all, this quaint city is overlooked by a medieval castle which dates to the 11th century. The energetic are welcome to climb the 150 steps to the castle’s observation tower and be rewarded with sweeping views of the city below and even the Julian Alps beyond.
Take a stroll around the capital and you will see why it was awarded the coveted title of European Green Capital in 2016. There are green spaces galore, tree-lined trails along the riverbank, as well as traffic limitations in the city centre to reduce noise, pollution, and chaos. As such, you will find that Ljubljana is a fantastic place to take a long and meandering stroll.
Ljubljana is also a fantastic city to visit during the winter months when it comes alive with its annual festive market. Each year, these Christmas delights pop up in several locations across the city, including by the riverbank and the castle courtyard. On offer is a wonderful range of homemade crafts and local food and beverages.
