Salzburg garnered its name from the salt mines surrounding the city, with “salz” meaning “salt” and “burg” meaning castle.

In central Austria, lies the unquestionably beautiful city of Salzburg. With its location by the Salzach River and incredible alpine surroundings, this Bavarian city is known as one of Europe’s most stunning travel destinations. To add to that, the city is rich in architectural beauty, with episcopal buildings boasting a sharp Italian Renaissance and Baroque influence. Due to this, it was granted UNESCO World Heritage List status in the mid-90s.

Salzburg is also a prime musical destination, being the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, renowned musical composer and creator of operas, symphonies, and concertos. To learn more about this fascinating mind, head to the city’s Mozart museums. Five-time Oscar winner The Sound of Music was also filmed in and around the city in 1964. If you’re a fan of the film, visit the Mirabell Gardens where the “Do Re Mi” scene was shot.

Fortress Hohensalzburg is also an unmissable defining feature of Salzburg. This 11th-century castle towers over Salzburg, enduring as one of Europes’s best-preserved castles. Take the funicular up the hill, wander the castle grounds, and take in the gorgeous 360-degrees view of the city and its surrounds.

Things to do in Salzburg

A musical hub for hundreds of years, Salzburg was the birthplace of Mozart, whose former home, No. 9 Getreidegasse, is preserved as a museum open to the public. But the city is more than just Mozart’s legacy.

Inside a room with an antique wooden table in the front, with silver plates and two candle holders in the middle, three cream chairs surround the table. Behind is a wooden piano, and another chair at it. A sage door to the right, forwards, a dark wooden cabinet with drawers underneath. To the left, there is another one of these, with the doors open and a desk attached with paperwork on and another chair in front. The back wall has three grid windows and mesh white curtains and paintings between the windows.
