India – From the Himalayas to the Ganges

A trio of Golden Triangle cities, colonial-era hubs and significant spiritual centres await on this exploration of India’s historic northern states.

Starts in the national capital, Delhi, where you’ll explore its most significant landmarks both under guidance and at your own leisure. The famed ‘Toy Train’ will then take you on a panoramic journey to the Himalayan retreat of Shimla, a former summer capital of the British Raj. A day’s sightseeing is next on the agenda, and you can admire its colonial landmarks, including the Viceregal Lodge, which saw the first maps of Indian partition drawn, and the Gaiety Theatre. After a few days in the mountains, head back down to Chandigarh for a flight to Jaipur. While in the ‘Pink City’, you’ll take in historic Amber Fort, a former seat of the Rajput royal family, before viewing the red sandstone landmarks of the centre. Mark the midpoint of your holiday with a two-night stop in wildlife-rich Ranthambore and set out on two canter game drives in search of its Bengal tigers.

Continue to Agra, the exquisite ‘City of Love’, stopping en route in Abhaneri, home to the magnificent Chand Baori stepwell and Harshat Maha temple. In Agra, bookend a day’s sightseeing with sunrise and sunset visits to the Taj Mahal before following the Ganges eastward to Varanasi. Feel the city's spirituality as you walk the city’s streets on guided tour of its religious sites and gain an appreciation for Hindu traditions as you watch morning prayers on an early-morning Ganges boat ride. The region, thought to be the birthplace of Buddhism, is rife with ancient shrines and temples, and you’ll have time to take in its highlights with a stop in the popular pilgrimage town Sarnath.
