Staff stories: Lifting the lid on Japan with Sophie
We sat down with our Digital Marketing Manager, Sophie, to chat about her most recent trip to Japan and her top five spots to visit when in the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’.
Japan, a destination which sits near the top of many a travel wish-list, and for good reason. From neon-lit city centres to the rural villages and ancient shrines that dot the picturesque landscapes, the country’s captivating contrasts offer something for every traveller.
Our Digital Marketing Manager, Sophie, recently returned from a two-week adventure across this East Asian gem, and we sat down with her to get the inside track on her highlights.
1. Kyoto
If you’re searching for tradition and tranquillity on your holiday to Japan, then Kyoto is the place to start. Home to over 1,600 Buddhist temples, traditional tea houses, and geisha-lined streets, Kyoto invites you to experience the spirit of old Japan. Be sure to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha, one of the most iconic Shinto shrines in Japan, and Kinkaku-ji, a shimmering golden temple, before you leave. No visit to Kyoto would be complete without also taking part in a traditional tea ceremony!
2. Nara
Just a short train ride from Kyoto, Nara is famous for its friendly deer and ancient temples. This compact city makes for a great day trip that packs in cultural heritage and natural beauty. Nara’s cultural highlights include Todai-ji Temple, home to the Great Buddha, the largest bronze Buddha statue in the world and nearby Nara Park, where hundreds of tame deer wander freely. Another must-see is Kasuga-taisha, a beautifully preserved Shinto shrine with several stone and bronze lanterns, and the colourful wisterias of Manyo Botanical Gardens.
3. Hiroshima
Hiroshima is a city that tells a powerful story of the past while looking firmly toward the future. As the first city in history to be targeted by an atomic bomb, it has since become a symbol of peace and resilience. A visit to the Peace Memorial Park and the Peace Memorial Museum provides a poignant day’s exploration, telling the city’s story with dignity and emotional impact. The Atomic Bomb Dome, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands as a haunting yet hopeful reminder of the past, and leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.
4. Osaka
Often seen as the culinary heart of Japan, Osaka is another must-see city, and it all revolves around Dotonbori, a dazzling entertainment district filled with bright neon lights, animated billboards, and the aromas of fresh street food. If you get the chance, be sure to try local specialties like takoyaki (octopus balls), okonomiyaki (a savoury pancake), or perhaps the famous wobbly cheesecake from Uncle Rikuro’s. Shinsaibashi, Osaka’s premier shopping district, is the perfect place to spend some time at leisure after lunch. Wherever your exploration takes you, it’s unlikely you’ll leave Osaka hungry!
5. Tokyo
No trip to Japan would be complete without exploring the bustling streets of the capital, Tokyo. The city promises contrasting highlights at every turn, and the Asakusa district, with its lantern-lit Senso-ji Temple, offers the perfect introduction to its ancient past. Compare Asakusa with the city’s modern neighbourhoods, Shinjuku and Shibuya, and you’ll enjoy an entirely different experience. Don’t miss the iconic Shibuya Crossing, the world’s busiest pedestrian crossing, or the grand Imperial Palace, which serves as a reminder of the country’s colonial legacy.
6. Mount Fuji
Visible from Tokyo on a clear day, Mount Fuji is more than just a volcano, it’s Japan’s most recognisable natural landmark. Standing proud at 3,776 metres, Fujisan is a sacred mountain and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. A day trip from Tokyo is a great way to see the surrounding area and soak up the views from Lake Kawaguchi. The locals often joke that Fujisan is shy as she is only visible for around 80 days a year.
