Inside our itineraries: Exploring the Edinburgh Tattoo with our expert tour manager
Get a glimpse behind the scenes of one of the British events calendar’s most exciting occasions as we talk all things Tattoo with our tour manager, Gordon.
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo’s landmark 75th show is finally here, with its first performance kicking off this evening, and eyes are already turning towards the elegant Scottish capital. With uniquely choreographed performances, massed military bands and the sheer spectacle of Edinburgh Castle dressed in lights, this year’s Tattoo is sure to be as impressive as ever. Each show is completely different, and the Tattoo’s 75th anniversary will be no different, so whether you’re a seasoned Tattoo-goer or have no idea what to expect, you won’t want to miss one of Scotland’s most famous summer highlights.
To get some deeper insight into the Tattoo and what it means to locals, we’ve been speaking to one of our Edinburgh-born tour managers, Gordon. From his fondest Tattoo memories to his favourite pre-show traditions, he walked us through how to enjoy this memorable occasion.
1. How long have you been helping our customers experience the Edinburgh Tattoo?
Time doesn’t matter, really! For me, each visit is like the first time – new people, different weather and new situations to look forward to.
2. What first drew you to tour managing, and does anything still surprise you?
It was my mother’s fault – she told me to get a proper job when I lived in Lithuania 24 years ago! My biggest surprise at this point is the fact that I actually can still be surprised. Nothing is ever the same.
3. What makes the Tattoo special for you?
It’s in Edinburgh, which is my hometown. I went to the University of Edinburgh, and it’s a real pleasure to return and show our customers the highlights of the city. I can still remember as kids coming across the Forth on the ferry, all with our kilts on, to go to the Tattoo.
4. Do you have any advice you’d give to any first-time Tattoo-goers?
Soak up the atmosphere in town during the afternoon. It’s also a good idea to bring a plastic poncho in case of rain and some tissues to wipe your eyes at the sight and sounds of the massed pipes!
5. Are there any other must-see landmarks or activities around Edinburgh that you’d recommend customers experience?
There are really too many to choose from! From the Royal Yacht Britannia and National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street to Real Mary’s Close and Holyrood House, there are so many spectacular sights along the Royal Mile. In fact, you’ll want to come back on Newmarket Holidays’ festive tour of the city, Edinburgh Christmas Markets.
6. Given this year marks the 75th anniversary of the Tattoo, are you doing anything special to celebrate?
The show itself will be a celebration enough!
7. Is there anything our customers can do in advance to get in the Tattoo mood?
My favourite ways to get in the spirit are listening to Andy Stewart on YouTube and rewatching episodes of the White Heather Club.
8. Do you have a favourite tradition or food to enjoy before or after the show?
It has to be haggis, neeps and tatties or head down to the chip shop in the Grassmarket for a deep-fried Mars bar.
9. Finally, if you had to sum up the tattoo in three words, which would you choose?
Best of Scotland!
