Angkor Wat’s UNESCO-listed serves as an enthralling look into Cambodia’s ancient, pre-industrial era. Holidays to Angkor Wat offer travellers an opportunity to dive deeper into the country’s fascinating history and be transported back to another time.

Covering an incredible 15 miles from east to west, the archaeological park is situated in the country’s north, not far from Siem Reap, the nation’s second-largest city. Constructed during the reign of King Suryavarman II, who ruled his empire between the years 1113 to 1150, the temples were diligently built from large blocks of sandstone, extracted 18 miles north of the complex.

During the 19th century, the ruins of Angkor Wat - then densely covered in jungle growth - were ‘rediscovered’ by the French archaeologist Henri Mouhot. This eventually led to a detailed restoration project, and in 1992, Angkor was declared a World Heritage Site.
